Today, Thursday 12 September, marks the 11th R U OK Day – a national
day of action dedicated to reminding us all to ask how our friends,
families and colleagues are doing and to support those who may be
struggling with life’s ups and downs.
Mental illness is a daily struggle for many Australians with the
country’s suicide rate sitting at 12.9 per 100,000 — that’s above the
World Health Organisation's global average of 10.7.
Over half of those suffering from mental health issues in Australia
never seek help and instead battle in silence.
Asking “are you okay” may seem frivolous to some, but this simple
sentence may help in starting a meaningful conversation that has the
potential to save someone’s life.
We are encouraged today and every day to trust our instincts when we see
even the smallest change in our friends, family and colleagues and ask
the question, “are you okay?”.
