LGEA Update: Industry Response to COVID-19

The LGEA, USU, depa and LGNSW have released a Joint Statement on how the industry should respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Joint Statement is consistent with the recommended approach the LGEA sent to members last week, and is a result of negotiations between the parties.

The LGEA has been pressing for an industry-wide approach for weeks, and we are very pleased that we have been able to finally secure an agreed position on this.

Please note, the Joint Statement establishes what we consider to be the minimum standards that should apply. We will continue to encourage all councils to supplement the provisions of this Joint Statement. This is particularly the case for any employees who contract COVID-19, and exhaust their current sick leave entitlement – if this occurs the LGEA will strongly encourage all councils to provide additional paid sick leave, instead of requiring employees to utilise other forms of leave.

It is important to note that the Award already provides for this at subclause 21A (ix) for employees who have been at their council for 5 years or more.

We are aware that many councils are yet to implement policies on this, and we hope that this Joint Statement will help bring a unified approach to this across the industry.

A big thank you to those proactive LGEA members and delegates who have already raised this with their HR departments, or JCCs and provided the LGEA’s recommended approach as circulated last week.

If you have any questions about how your council is approaching the current COVID-19 pandemic please contact your local LGEA delegate or your LGEA official.
